Reading the pairs

A metal inside its range can still fail the number that matters

Each toxic metal is judged against the nutrient that opposes it. That pairing catches something a single reading cannot.

  • Ca/Pb 84:1
  • Zn/Cd 500:1
  • Zn/Hg 200:1

The sentence the whole idea rests on

From the laboratory literature, and worth reading twice:

"A ratio below 84:1 would indicate a potential toxicity of lead, even if the lead is within an acceptable level."

That is what hidden toxicity means. Not a metal above its limit — a metal that looks fine on its own line and fails the moment it is set against the nutrient that opposes it.

Read a toxic metal alone and you get half the picture. The half you are missing is how much protection is standing against it.

The upper limits, in milligrams percent

On the Trace Elements set:

  • Mercury under 0.10
  • Cadmium under 0.04
  • Lead under 0.5
  • Aluminum under 1.0
  • Arsenic under 0.020
  • Uranium under 0.0170

A result under every one of those can still carry a failing ratio. That is the entire point of the next section.

Each metal has a nutrient it is measured against

These are minimums. Below the figure is where the pairing is judged to be failing:

  • Ca/Pb at least 84 : 1
  • Zn/Cd at least 500 : 1
  • Zn/Hg at least 200 : 1
  • Fe/Pb at least 4.4 : 1
  • Fe/Hg at least 22 : 1
  • Mg/Pb at least 12 : 1
  • Cu/Pb at least 5 : 1
  • Zn/Pb at least 40 : 1
  • Se/Hg at least 0.8 : 1

Notice that lead appears in four of them and mercury in three. A single metal is read against several different nutrients, because more than one thing opposes it.

Two ways to fail the same ratio

A ratio is a fraction, so it can fall for two entirely different reasons — and they call for different thinking.

The metal rose. The straightforward reading, and the one people expect.

The nutrient fell. Zinc dropping will pull Zn/Cd and Zn/Hg and Zn/Pb down together, with no change in any metal at all. Three ratios worsen and nothing toxic moved.

This is why the report is read as a set rather than line by line, and why the laboratory position is that the relationship between nutrients matters more than any single level.

What this is, and is not

A hair tissue mineral analysis is a screening test. It screens for nutritional and toxic-element patterns. It does not diagnose, it does not establish a cause, and it does not measure what is circulating in blood today.

What it does well is exactly this kind of proportional reading — a pattern held across two to three months of growth, judged against the nutrients that oppose each metal. Anything medical belongs with your own licensed provider.

What I look for first — Eileen Durfee

The reports that concern me most are rarely the ones with an obvious number sticking out. They are the ones where every toxic line looks acceptable and two or three of the pairings are quietly under their minimum.

So I read the ratios before the levels, every time. If a pairing is failing I want to know which half moved — because a zinc that has fallen away is a different conversation from a metal that has climbed.

Questions people ask

Can a metal be a problem if it is within the acceptable range?

The laboratory literature says yes: a ratio below its minimum indicates potential toxicity of that metal even when the metal itself reads within an acceptable level. That is what hidden toxicity refers to.

Why is each metal compared to a nutrient?

Because the nutrient opposes it. Reading the pair shows how much protection stands against the metal, which a single figure cannot show.

My zinc dropped and three ratios got worse. Did I take on more metal?

Not necessarily. A ratio falls if the metal rises or if the nutrient falls. Zinc appears in the cadmium, mercury and lead pairings, so one zinc change moves all three at once.
