How to read your dosage — the label is not your dose

The bottle says take one capsule a day. That is the generic label default, and it is almost never what a hair tissue mineral analysis actually calls for.

A lab report prescribes a schedule written as three numbers — morning, noon and evening:

On your report What it means
1 One capsule, once a day
1-1-0 One in the morning, one at noon, none in the evening
1-1-1 One with each of the three meals
2-1-1 Two in the morning, one at noon, one in the evening
2-2-1 Two, two, then one
1-1-2 One, one, then two — weighted to the evening
3-3-3 Three with each meal, nine a day in total

Those are examples rather than a complete list — reports use many combinations, and the amounts are set from your own oxidation rate and mineral ratios. A formula the label treats as a once-a-day supplement may well be prescribed several times a day on a chart, or only in the morning, or not at all.

So do not work out how long a bottle will last from the label. Work it out from your schedule. If you are on 3-3-3, a 180-count bottle is twenty days, not six months.

If you have a report and are not certain how to read it, send it over — walking people through their own numbers is exactly what the text support is for.

From Eileen Durfee

What the chart is showing when this is chosen

Vitamin D is the exception on this shelf: it is a blood test question, not a hair one. A hair tissue mineral analysis tells you a great deal about how your body is handling calcium, but it does not give you your vitamin D level. That comes from a blood draw, and it is worth having the number before taking a dose at this strength.

Two groups run low far more often than they expect. People living in northern latitudes, where for much of the year the sun simply is not strong enough or high enough in the sky for the skin to make meaningful amounts. And people with darker skin, where more melanin means far longer sun exposure is needed to produce the same amount. Neither is a failing of diet or effort; it is geography and physiology.

This is one of the clearest illustrations of why both kinds of testing belong in the picture. They answer different questions, and neither one replaces the other.

Vitamin D also interacts with calcium retention, which is something a hair analysis does speak to — so the two readings are worth looking at together rather than in isolation. Your healthcare provider can help you fit a dose to your own blood level.

Endo-met formulas are designed to be chosen from a chart rather than from a list of symptoms, and that is how I use them. The same product can suit one oxidation pattern well and another poorly, which is why I would rather look at your numbers than guess from how you are feeling.

I came to hair analysis in 2010, under ARNP Julie Walker in Kennewick, Washington, and worked directly with Analytical Research Labs — testing family and friends until I could read a chart properly. I listened to every cassette tape Dr. Paul Eck recorded and read every newsletter that laboratory published. When I found out a degree in Nutritional Balancing existed, I signed up with Dr. Larry Wilson in August 2011, and I have practised independently since the autumn of 2017. The most useful thing I can offer is not a longer product list — it is help reading your own chart and adjusting between tests. Mineral patterns almost always shift on a retest, and watching that happen chart to chart is where the real learning is. I hand-select the formulas and the absorbable forms that consistently help people feel and function better.

How I am available to you. If you order a hair analysis, you get text support from me while you are on the program — retracing and detox questions are best answered as they happen, not weeks later. It takes about three months to train someone to understand what is going on and adjust their own program between tests, and that is the goal. Our Facebook group is free to join whether or not you have bought anything: ask questions there and read through the tips already shared.

I also work in order of priorities, to fit your budget. Some people go all out for longevity; others take only what their hair analysis calls for, once a day. Both are worth doing. Tell me where you are and we will start there.

Matched to your chart. Endo-met formulas are designed to be selected from Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis results rather than chosen from symptoms, because the same product can suit one oxidation pattern well and another poorly. If you are unsure whether this one fits you, a hair analysis answers that from your own numbers.

The Hidden Signs of Vitamin D Deficiency in Grown-Ups

Don't let a secret health issue be lurking beneath the surface. Vitamin D deficiency can be sneaky, hiding behind a range of seemingly unrelated symptoms. Here are the telltale signs that may indicate you're not getting enough vitamin D:

  • Energy Drain: Feeling perpetually fatigued, no matter how much rest you get. It's like your batteries are always on minus.
  • Pain Points: General aches and discomfort that seem to pop up out of nowhere. You might feel like you've got a permanent bruise – without the actual bruise.
  • Weak Links: Feeling like your muscles or bones are made of jelly. It's like your entire body is screaming for some extra support.
  • Risky Breaks: Increased risk of stress fractures, particularly in the legs, hips, and pelvis. Ouch – the thought alone is enough to send chills down your spine!

The good news is that diagnosing a vitamin D deficiency is relatively straightforward. A quick blood test with your healthcare provider can reveal the answer. If needed, X-rays can provide a clearer picture of your bone strength. Don't let a deficiency linger – catch it early and take action to restore your natural energy and vitality.

What Influences the Body's Ability to Utilize Sunlight for Vitamin D?

Getting enough vitamin D from sunlight may seem simple, but various factors can complicate this natural process and affect your vitamin D status:

  • Air Quality: High pollution levels can diminish the intensity of UV rays, making it harder for your skin to synthesize vitamin D.
  • Sunscreen Application: While essential for protecting your skin from damage, sunscreen may also inhibit vitamin D production by creating a barrier against UV exposure.
  • Indoor Habits: A lifestyle that keeps you indoors for extended periods can drastically limit sun exposure, impacting your body's ability to generate vitamin D.
  • City Living: Living in urban environments filled with tall buildings can block sunlight, further restricting your chances of absorbing this vital nutrient.
  • Skin Color: Those with darker skin tones possess higher levels of melanin, which can reduce the skin's capability to produce vitamin D through sunlight interaction.

These factors can increase the likelihood of developing a vitamin D deficiency. Thus, it's essential to explore alternative means of obtaining vitamin D, such as dietary sources or supplements, to keep your levels within a healthy range.

Could Vitamin D Mitigate the Impact of Illnesses Like the Flu and COVID-19?

The potential role of vitamin D in lessening the severity of infections such as the flu and COVID-19 has attracted significant attention from researchers. As investigations unfold, the findings offer an intriguing perspective on this important topic.

Research in this area shows varying conclusions. Nevertheless, certain studies indicate that maintaining adequate vitamin D levels may reduce the risk of experiencing severe symptoms linked to these viral illnesses. Some analyses highlight that a deficiency in vitamin D might contribute to an elevated risk of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a serious complication often associated with severe respiratory infections.

Including sufficient vitamin D in your daily routine—whether through sunlight, dietary sources like fatty fish and fortified foods, or supplements—could serve as a proactive measure. While it may not offer definitive protection against these diseases, ensuring optimal vitamin D levels plays a crucial role in bolstering overall immune function.

As with any health supplement or regimen, it's important to seek guidance from a healthcare professional to receive personalized recommendations that suit your health needs and circumstances.

Unraveling the Connection: Vitamin D and Weight Management

Is there a hidden connection between vitamin D and weight loss? As researchers continue to investigate, the evidence reveals a complex narrative that warrants further exploration.

A growing body of research has uncovered a surprising correlation between body weight and vitamin D levels. Studies suggest that individuals with higher body mass indexes (BMIs) often experience lower vitamin D levels, prompting scientists to examine whether a deficiency in vitamin D might play a role in weight gain. While the relationship is not yet fully understood, some studies hint at a potential link between vitamin D and obesity.

A notable study discovered that participants who took daily supplements of calcium and vitamin D experienced greater weight loss compared to those on a placebo. The researchers proposed that the supplements may have had an appetite-suppressing effect, contributing to the weight reduction observed.

It's essential to note, however, that current scientific evidence does not conclusively establish vitamin D as a direct cause of weight loss. While intriguing connections exist, the relationship between vitamin D and body weight remains an area of ongoing research, requiring further investigation to clarify these findings.

How is Vitamin D Synthesized in the Body?

The synthesis of vitamin D in the body begins with exposure to sunlight. When your skin encounters the sun's ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, it sets off a sequence of reactions that convert a compound known as 7-dehydrocholesterol into vitamin D3.

Key Factors Affecting Sunlight Exposure and Vitamin D Synthesis:

  • Geographic Location and Season: Residing closer to the equator typically allows for greater UVB exposure throughout the year. Conversely, those living further from the equator receive less UVB radiation, particularly during the winter months.
  • Time of Day: The midday sun, when UVB rays are most intense, is the most effective time for vitamin D production in the skin.
  • Skin Color: Individuals with lighter skin tones are more adept at absorbing UVB rays, leading to increased vitamin D synthesis compared to individuals with darker skin tones.
  • Age: As people age, their skin's capacity to convert sunlight into vitamin D tends to diminish.
How Does Vitamin D Facilitate Calcium and Phosphorus Absorption?

Vitamin D3 is instrumental in enhancing the body’s ability to absorb calcium, thereby supporting stronger bones and lowering the risk of fractures. It plays a vital role in both the absorption and retention of calcium and phosphorus, two minerals critical for sustaining bone density and overall skeletal health. By ensuring that you have sufficient vitamin D3 levels, you bolster your body's capacity to develop and maintain robust bones, thereby decreasing the chances of encountering bone-related problems.
