The instinctive way to read a toxic-metals panel is one line at a time: is my lead high, is my mercury high. The more useful reading is relational — each metal judged against the nutrient mineral that opposes it. A metal can sit comfortably “in range” while the mineral that is supposed to hold it in check is too low to do the job. That situation has a name in this literature: hidden toxicity.

Trace Elements' current upper limits for the majors, in milligrams percent: mercury below 0.10, cadmium below 0.04, lead below 0.5, aluminum below 1.0, arsenic below 0.020. Staying under these is necessary — but not sufficient, which is what the ratios are for.

These are Trace Elements' 2010-era published minimums. The logic is the same in every row: the metal does damage by impersonating or displacing a nutrient, so protection is a matter of arithmetic between the two.
Take lead at 0.4 mg% — under the 0.5 limit, so the line looks clean. If calcium sits at 30 mg%, the Ca/Pb ratio is 75:1, below the 84:1 floor. Nothing on that chart is flagged red, and yet the protective margin is gone. This arithmetic is the entire point of ratio reading: levels describe presence; ratios describe defence.
First, a hair test is a screening tool — it reports what tissue is eliminating, and it neither diagnoses anything nor measures total body burden. Second, metals stored deep often do not register until elimination improves; it is common to see a metal rise on a retest as it leaves. A rising line on a chart that is otherwise improving is usually movement, not new exposure — the direction across several tests tells the difference. Both caveats argue for the same habit: test, support, retest. The HTMA test establishes the baseline, and the retest is where the story develops.
