What a Hair Test Does Not Measure

Reading the limits

The honest boundaries of a two-to-three-month average

Knowing what a reading cannot do is what makes the rest of it trustworthy. Four limits worth understanding before you interpret a single number.

  • A screening test
  • 2 to 3 months per reading
  • 1.5 inches, cut at the scalp

It is a screening test, not a diagnosis

This is the first and largest limit. A hair tissue mineral analysis screens for mineral patterns. It does not diagnose disease, it does not name the cause of a symptom, and it does not replace anything your own licensed provider does.

Used as a screen, it is genuinely useful — subclinical shortfalls are estimated to outnumber frank deficiencies roughly ten to one, and a screening instrument is exactly the right tool for that kind of gap.

It reports a period, not a moment

Each reading averages roughly two to three months of hair growth. That is a strength and a limit at once.

The strength: a two-month average is not thrown off by one bad night or one unusual meal, which is where a single blood draw can mislead.

The limit: it cannot show you today. If something changed three weeks ago, most of the sample predates it.

Sample length changes the answer completely

This is the most concrete limit in the whole subject, and the evidence is unusually clean. A 22-inch strand was cut into fourteen segments and analysed along its length. Calcium read 27 mg% at the scalp and over 200 mg% at the distal end.

Long hair does not report current status. It reports years of accumulated environmental exposure. That is why the protocol is specific:

  • Scalp hair only, sampled from multiple sites — mid-parietal back to occipital. Multiple sites beat one.
  • About 250 mg of hair, cut at the scalp.
  • No more than 1.5 inches, discarding the distal portion. If hair is long, submit only the length nearest the scalp.
  • High-grade stainless scissors only — rusty blades add iron and chrome-plated blades add chromium to the result.

A sample taken casually is not a cheaper test. It is a different test, of a different period, and the report cannot tell you that happened.

What you put on your hair is part of the reading

Samples are analysed unwashed, because washing removes over 90% of sodium and potassium — two of the minerals the core ratios depend on.

Shampoos, conditioners and dyes should be noted on the request form, because they can contribute to the reading. Pubic hair is confirmatory only, and the tell for contamination there is elevated phosphorus.

What I look for first — Eileen Durfee

The limit I explain most often is the time one. People bring me a report and ask why it does not reflect the change they made a fortnight ago. It cannot — most of that sample grew before the change.

The other one I insist on is the scissors and the length. I would rather delay a test than run one on six inches of hair, because the result will look like a real answer and quietly be an answer about several years ago.

Questions people ask

Can a hair test diagnose a condition?

No. It is a screening test for mineral patterns. It does not diagnose, and it does not replace assessment by your own licensed provider.

How far back does one reading go?

Roughly two to three months of growth, which is why it is read as a pattern rather than a current snapshot.

Why can I not use long hair?

Because mineral content changes dramatically along the length. In one published example calcium read 27 mg% at the scalp and over 200 mg% at the far end of a 22-inch strand. Only the first 1.5 inches reflects the recent period.

Should I wash my hair before sampling?

Samples are analysed unwashed. Washing removes over 90% of sodium and potassium, which would distort the ratios those minerals appear in.
