People who sweat every day — sauna users, hot-exercise people, outdoor workers — often ask whether the habit skews their hair test. It is a better question than they realise. Two minerals on the chart, sodium and potassium, are genuinely volatile: they move with recent chemistry, they leave in sweat, and they are the reason the sample-handling rules exist at all.

Sodium and potassium are water-soluble. Wash a hair sample in the lab and the majority of both rinses away — the literature puts the loss above ninety percent — taking the two most stress-responsive lines on the chart with it. The practical instruction for you is simpler: sample clean, dry hair, cut close to the scalp, and let the lab do nothing to it.
Sweat is not distilled water. It carries sodium, potassium, and smaller amounts of other minerals out with it, and a heavy daily practice adds a real elimination route the chart is partly recording. In a regular sauna user, sodium and potassium readings deserve reading with that context in mind: the levels reflect both what stress chemistry is doing and what the sweat habit is removing. Neither meaning is wrong — they are superimposed. This is context to give whoever reads your chart, the same way you would mention a major diet change.
The sodium/potassium ratio is the one this literature treats as central — Trace Elements puts the ideal at 2.4, Analytical Research Labs at 2.5, and in practice Eileen reads the range between them. The ratio holds its meaning better than either absolute level precisely because both minerals leave in sweat together. A hard-training, heavy-sweating season may move the levels; the ratio between them is the steadier signal about how the stress-handling system is keeping up.
The literature is blunt that certain toxic metals — cadmium among them — can hold sodium up on a chart even when the underlying stress-gland activity is low. A sweating athlete with surprisingly high sodium is usually just a sweating athlete; but when the picture does not add up, the metals panel and its protective ratios are where a practitioner looks next. It is one more reason single lines are never read alone.
A daily sweat practice makes electrolyte replacement part of the routine rather than an afterthought — water alone replaces the water and none of the minerals. The practice side of that (what to drink, how to salt food, timing) is the hub companion's territory. The chart side is simpler: if you sweat heavily and supplement electrolytes, both facts belong in the notes you give with your hair tissue mineral analysis, so the reading reflects your actual life.

My own charts taught me the volatile-pair lesson. Season to season, my sodium and potassium move more than any other lines, and the ratio between them is what I actually watch. When a client is a heavy sweater I ask about it before I read a single number, because that context changes what “low sodium” is allowed to mean. Tell your practitioner you sweat. It is data.

No special preparation is needed beyond sampling clean, dry hair — the sample averages two to three months of growth, so one session either way is noise. Just note the habit for whoever reads the chart.
Sustained supplementation is part of your mineral intake and belongs in your notes. It does not invalidate the test; it is context, like diet.
