Hair Analysis: Why Not to Wash the Hair Samples

Posted by Eileen Durfee on 16th Mar 2015

Hair Analysis test helps repair your body and enhance your well-being by means of mineral imbalance correction and toxic metal reduction. All samples of hair sent in for one of our Hair Analysis tests are processed by Analytical Research Labs. This is the only lab that does not wash the samples in the lab before analyzing.

For the most accurate results, it is important the laboratory not wash the hair samples.

Why the hair should not be washed

Studies show that hair washed in the lab before testing is even worse than contamination caused from an environmental agent. The washing extracts loosely bound minerals from the hair, which are part of the biopsy material.

Washing the hair in the lab has the following effects:

  • Detergents and harsh chemicals wipe out water-soluble components
  • Washing agents eliminate exogenous minerals
  • Washing agents tarnish the interior of the hair’s tissue
  • Different laboratories do not use the same chemicals to wash or even wash for the same amount of time – this produces varying test results

It is not necessary for hair samples to be washed in the lab, as the participant must wash the hair 24-48 hours prior to taking the sample. While this could possibly remove some water-soluble minerals, they have the opportunity to appear again within a half hour from the oil or sweat glands. Hair that is washed after already being removed from the head does not have that chance.

This recommendation of not washing hair samples is important for the efficiency of the hair’s water-soluble elements. Hair that is washed in the lab is stripped of its natural minerals, leading to distorted results. Therefore, we highly encourage you to use a laboratory that does not wash hair samples in order to receive the best possible results.
